There are two special kinds of glass made to protect people:

Laminated glass and Tempered glass. Both are called “safety glass” because they are designed to reduce harm if they break.

Laminated vs. Tempered Glass: Understanding the Difference in Safety and Strength https://www.allthingsaluminium.co.ke

What is Laminated Glass?

Think of laminated glass as a glass sandwich. It’s built to hold itself together even after a hard hit.

How it’s made: Laminated glass starts with two or more sheets of glass. In between these sheets is a clear tough plastic layer usually called PVB (polyvinyl Butyral). They are glued together using heat and high pressure.

The Safety Trick: If this glass breaks the pieces do not fly away. Instead, they stick to the strong plastic layer in the middle. The glass cracks in a spider web pattern but stays mostly in its frame. This keeps the hole covered and prevents sharp glass from falling on anyone.

Where We Use It: Because it holds together, you find laminated glass in places where security or falling glass is a concern. The best example is your car windshield. You also see it in skylights and glass railings.

What is Tempered Glass?

Tempered glass is all about strength. It’s treated to be much tougher than regular glass.

How it’s made: Regular glass is heated up to a very high temperature then quickly cooled down with air jets. This quick cooling process is called quenching. It creates strong tension (tightness) on the inside and heavy compression (squeezing) on the surface.

The Strength: This process makes tempered glass up to four times stronger than normal glass of the same thickness. It can handle more impact and bigger changes in temperature.

The Safety Trick: If tempered glass breaks it shatters into thousands of tiny, dull, pebble-like pieces. It does not create large sharp shards. This breakage pattern makes it much safer as the small pieces are far less likely to cause serious injury.

Where We Use It: Because of its strength and safe breakage pattern, tempered glass is used in shower doors, glass table tops and the side and back windows of cars.

Both laminated and tempered glass are foundational materials in safety applications each achieving safety through a distinct engineering approach.

At All Things Aluminium & Glass, we supply and install both laminated glass and tempered glass in Kenya, ensuring our clients get the right solution for safety, durability, and design.
