5 Things to Look for Before Buying Aluminium Frames
Planning to install new windows, doors, or glass partitions? Aluminium frames are one of the best choices you can make — strong, lightweight, rust-resistant, and stylish. But not all frames are equal. Here are the five things you must check before spending a shilling.
Wall Thickness of the Aluminium Profile
The thickness of the aluminium profile determines how strong and durable your frames will be. Low-quality frames are made from thin aluminium that bends easily and does not hold glass securely. A good frame should have a wall thickness of at least 1.2mm, and for heavy-duty commercial use, 1.4mm or more is recommended. Always ask your supplier for the profile specifications before ordering.
Quality of the Finish
The finish on aluminium frames protects them from weather, UV rays, and corrosion. The two best options are powder coating — a smooth, colourful finish highly resistant to chipping — and anodizing, which creates a harder, more natural metallic look. Avoid frames with thin or uneven finishes; they will peel and fade quickly, especially in humid environments like Nairobi.
Type and Quality of Glazing Seals
Glazing seals are the rubber or silicone strips that hold glass in place inside the frame. Poor seals allow water to leak through, let in dust and noise, and cause glass to rattle. Always look for frames fitted with EPDM rubber seals — weather-resistant, long-lasting, and tight even as temperatures change. If a supplier cannot tell you what seals they use, walk away.
Hardware Quality — Hinges, Handles & Locks
Even the best frame will fail if the hardware is cheap. Look for stainless steel or zinc alloy hardware, which resists rust and holds up over time. Test handles and hinges in a showroom if possible — they should feel solid, move smoothly, and close with a satisfying click. Never compromise on hardware to save a few shillings upfront; you will pay more in repairs later.
Supplier Reputation & After-Sales Support
Who you buy from matters as much as what you buy. A reputable supplier will offer a warranty on both materials and installation, carry out a proper site assessment, and be available if something goes wrong after fitting. Ask for references, check reviews, and compare at least two or three suppliers before deciding. A company that rushes you without visiting your site first is one to avoid.
